Tree Service Vienna VA

Vienna’s tree canopy fell from 44.5 percent in 2011 to 38.7 percent in 2021, 163 acres gone, a 13 percent decline in ten years, worst on the southeast side of town at over 30 percent. The Town measured it itself. Most of that did not come from storms. It came from redevelopment, which is why tree work on a Vienna property is usually a construction question wearing a tree costume.

The G&V Rules-and-Roots Sequence

How a Vienna job runs when a build is involved, next door or on your own lot.

Step 1A free look on siteAn arborist sees the trees and the lot in person before anything is priced.
Step 2Which rules applyTown Code Chapter 17, Town right-of-way, the Windover Heights historic district, or nobody’s rules at all.
Step 3Root zones firstCondition documented and root zones assessed before a neighbouring demolition, so the fencing lands where it protects.
Step 4Then the workStructural pruning, removal where a tree will not recover, a crane when there is no room to drop it, and the stump last.

The Canopy Fell From 44.5% to 38.7% in Ten Years

The 2022 Urban Tree Canopy Assessment, prepared for the Town by Davey Resource Group, put the loss at 163 acres. The longer view is starker: Vienna was at 33.8 percent in 1990, climbed to 44.5 percent by 2011, and has given most of that gain back. What remains is worth real money: the assessment values the town’s trees at roughly $4.3 million a year in benefits, $4.0 million of it stormwater.

About a Hundred Houses a Year Come Down

Roughly 100 homes in Vienna are demolished and replaced each year, and more than half the town sits on quarter-acre lots. The Town’s Comprehensive Plan is direct about the consequence: “during the past decade, many lots with older homes have been redeveloped with newer and larger houses, resulting in the loss of many mature trees,” along with more impervious surface. It describes the shift as moving from modest mid-twentieth-century homes to larger, multi-storey ones.

Vienna Woods, built between 1952 and 1964 with more than 1,400 homes, was originally small ramblers. Much of the teardown activity happens on streets like those, where the houses are small, the lots are not, and the trees went in seventy years ago.

The Tree Next Door to the Teardown Is the One That Dies

This is the part homeowners miss. Trees removed for a demolition are counted and planned for. The tree that quietly dies is the mature oak next door, whose critical root zone was driven over, trenched through or buried under a materials stack for months. It does not fail that year. It thins, sprouts along the trunk, and goes over in a storm five or eight years later.

The Town’s Tree Preservation and Planting Guide takes this seriously: protection fencing must go up “before any site work including demolition, grading, and tree removal commences,” protection areas must stay “free from soil, vehicles, equipment, and the storage of construction materials,” heavy equipment is prohibited inside them, and root pruning is required where limits of disturbance enter a critical root zone. Trees with more than 30 percent critical root zone impact get no canopy credit at all.

If a lot beside yours is coming down, that is the moment for a tree health assessment, before the fencing goes up, not after the damage shows.

Vienna Has Its Own Tree Ordinance, and It Is Not the County’s

Vienna is an incorporated town, established in 1890, with its own Town Council, Public Works department and Town Code. A homeowner who calls the County about a tree here gets sent back to Town Hall.

The governing law is Town Code Chapter 17, the Tree Conservation Ordinance, effective July 29, 2024 under Virginia Code § 15.2-961.1. It applies to development and land disturbance of 2,500 square feet or more, and requires 10 to 25 percent canopy coverage depending on zoning district, measured at 20 years. The substantive 2024 change: preservation now takes priority over remove-and-replace, where before the Town had canopy minimums but did not dictate how developers met them. Shortfalls can be met by contributing to the Town’s Tree Preservation and Planting Fund.

For anything on your own lot, confirm with the Town Arborist at 703-255-6309 or trees@viennava.gov rather than assuming either way. The Town also has a nine-member Tree Advocacy Committee, created by that ordinance, and has been a Tree City USA every year since 2001.

The Tree Between Your Sidewalk and the Curb Is Not Yours

That grassy strip is Town right-of-way and its trees are governed separately. Any pruning or removal of Town-owned or right-of-way trees during construction must be pre-approved by the Director of Parks and Recreation, with bonding at the applicant’s expense. Right-of-way trees over one inch DBH must be inventoried whether or not the work touches them.

Replacement is specified too: two-inch caliper deciduous or six-foot evergreens, a one-year performance bond, 90 percent survival required. There is a live debate about the rest: under the Town’s Green Streets policy owners can currently opt out of Town-planted street trees, and about 18 percent of proposed plantings were declined across 2024 and 2025. The Tree Advocacy Committee recommended ending the opt-out; Council voted 5-2 to table it.

Oak Decline, Drought and Construction Damage

Oak decline in Northern Virginia affects chestnut oak and white oak primarily. The Tree Stewards and Virginia Cooperative Extension fact sheet is specific about the drivers: water stress from drought and extreme storms, plus construction damage, are primary. Fungal pathogens, insects and bacteria are secondary; they arrive after the tree is already weakened. It is long-term stress that can take decades to show.

Read that alongside a hundred teardowns a year and the connection is not subtle.

Bacterial leaf scorch is the other one worth knowing. Virginia Cooperative Extension describes it as caused by Xylella fastidiosa, hosted by oaks of the red oak group, elm and sycamore, symptoms appearing late in summer and progressing through the fall. The diagnostic sign is a yellow band between brown and green tissue. Progressive, eventually lethal, no cure. Emerald ash borer is present across the county and untreated ash typically die within three years.

Species figures are county-wide, not Vienna-specific: the Town’s assessment measured canopy area, not species. Countywide, the 2017 i-Tree survey puts American beech and red maple each at 9.7 percent, tulip tree at 6.3 percent.

What We Do Around a Vienna Build

Most of our Vienna work sits either side of construction. Before a neighbouring demolition starts, we assess root zones and tree condition so protection fencing goes in the right place rather than the convenient one, documenting condition beforehand, which matters if damage shows later. During the build it is monitoring, safety checks and root pruning at the limits of disturbance.

Afterwards come the ordinary tree care services: structural pruning to restore form and clear a new roofline, tree removal where a tree will not recover, and stump grinding once it is down. On a quarter-acre property that stump access usually runs through a neighbour’s garden or nowhere, so it gets planned. Landscaping crews and tree services are not the same trade. A landscape contractor will happily grade over a root plate, and a landscape plan rarely budgets for safety. Every G&V estimate in Vienna includes that condition check as standard, not as an extra.

Demolition notice on the lot next door? Have your own trees looked at before the protection fencing goes up.

Vienna Woods, Windover Heights and the Rest

We cover Vienna Woods, Mosby Woods, Fairhill, Green Hedges, Westwood Country Club, Hideaway, Cunningham Park and Moorefield, and around Ayr Hill, the town’s original name from 1767 to 1849. Windover Heights is an official Town historic district with its own Board of Review, so work on a property there carries an extra approval layer.

Vienna’s borders matter too. To the west we also run tree service in Oakton, and to the northeast, toward the Tysons interchange, we run tree service in Tysons Corner.

Three places people assume are in Vienna are just outside the town limits: Wolf Trap National Park sits in unincorporated Fairfax County, Nottoway Park is a Fairfax County Park Authority property, and Meadowlark Botanical Gardens belongs to NOVA Parks. Inside the town, Wildwood Park carries the restored stretch of Wolftrap Creek. Vienna drains to two watersheds: Difficult Run via Wolftrap Creek and Piney Branch, and Accotink Creek via Hunter’s Branch and Bear Branch.

On June 19, 2025 businesses on the south side of Maple Avenue closed after storms, with more than 70,000 Fairfax customers out at peak. On September 3 to 4, 2026, gusts reached 69 mph around Tysons, on the town’s border, the kind of week that calls for storm damage cleanup, not just pruning.

Questions From Vienna Homeowners

Do I need permission to remove a tree on my own Vienna lot?
Vienna’s Chapter 17 applies to land disturbance of 2,500 square feet or more. Whether your particular situation falls under it is a question for the Town Arborist at 703-255-6309, and because Vienna is an incorporated town, that is the right number, not Fairfax County’s.

Can I take out the tree between my sidewalk and the curb?
Not on your own; that is Town right-of-way. Pruning or removal of Town-owned or right-of-way trees during construction requires pre-approval from the Director of Parks and Recreation, plus bonding.

The lot next door is being torn down. Should I do anything?
Yes, before work starts. Protection fencing is supposed to go up before any site work including demolition, and protection areas must stay clear of soil, vehicles, equipment and materials. Get your own trees assessed while there is time to define the critical root zone.

Why has my oak been thinning since the neighbours rebuilt?
That is the common pattern. Construction damage is named as a primary driver of oak decline, and the effect is delayed: long-term stress that can take years to show. It is worth a proper assessment rather than waiting to see.

What is the yellow band on my leaf edges?
Likely bacterial leaf scorch. Virginia Cooperative Extension gives that yellow band as the diagnostic sign, appearing late summer into fall. Progressive, no cure, so the question becomes how long the tree can be kept safely.

G&V just left our house and because the experience was so good, I was compelled to write a review right away. I am absolutely satisfied with their work! The front of our home was a mess with a ton of weeds and overgrown plants. As a result, I searched Yelp and found G&V Tree and Landscaping Services. I was especially impressed with the great reviews. From the 1st call for the estimate through today, every communication was professional and helpful. We ended up getting the front redone. By the time I got home I was amazed with how everything looked. I thought I was at a different house! Furthermore, the two gentleman who did the work which included a tree trim, weeding, and redone front, really could not have been nicer. I could really tell they took a lot of pride in their work. I cannot recommend G & V enough!

    Richard C -from Yelp

A note to Mario and his staff for his professionalism and timeliness with tree service at our outdoor storage facility. We have a number of trees along the back fence line that consequently require maintenance and can be tricky to access. We have used G&V for several tree removal and trimming projects in this area so far. They respond to our requests quickly and most of all complete the work on time and with clean-up included. In addition, they also have online bill pay, which is nice. Highly recommend!

    Amanda H. -from Yelp

I contacted G&V on the morning because of an impending storm. I need them for emergency removal of a dead tree that as a result, would have caused severe damage to my home. Mario and his crew not only arrived within the hour, they worked into the beginnings of the storm itself to assure my home was safe. Therefore G&V has my highest recommendation for exceptional customer service, fair pricing, and quality of work. A 5-star rating is not high enough for G&V.

    Pedro -from Facebook

I cannot say enough positive things about G&V Tree and Landscaping Services. They got back to me right away and scheduled to come out within a day to give a quote. The quote was beyond reasonable for the work and they were able to come out and do it in just four days. Their team arrived on time and was so courteous and thorough. They trimmed four trees in my backyard that were very overgrown and cleaned everything up afterwards. I will definitely be using them again and recommend them to friends.
