Tree Service Ashburn VA

Ashburn’s trees were planted, not inherited. Ashburn Village opened in 1987, Broadlands went up through the 1990s, Brambleton took its first residents in 2002. The trees that went in with those houses are now 25 to 40 years old, which, for the fast-growing species favoured in that era, is exactly the age they come apart. That is a different job from tree work in an older inside-the-Beltway neighbourhood, and it starts with knowing what is in your yard.

The G&V Plant-Date Check

How an Ashburn visit runs, built around one question: when did this tree go in, and what was it?

  1. Step 1Name the plantingWe walk your lot and work out what went in with the house, whether Callery pear, Leyland cypress or a remnant oak, and the estimate is free.
  2. Step 2Decide keep or removeIf structural pruning can correct a lean or lighten a suspect limb, you hear that before removal is discussed.
  3. Step 3Check who must approveWe tell you whether your HOA has to sign off, and flag a Loudoun overlay such as the Broad Run buffer if one reaches your lot.
  4. Step 4Remove and grindWhen a tree does come out, stump grinding can be folded into the same removal job.

Ashburn Village Opened in 1987. Its Trees Are Now the Age Things Break.

Ashburn was farmland, known as Farmwell, into the twentieth century. Dulles opened in 1962 and the build-out followed through the 1980s and 90s. Ashburn Village covers more than 1,500 acres and over 5,000 residential units. Broadlands, a 1,500-acre master-planned community by Van Metre Homes in the 1990s, holds 4,298 housing units. Brambleton opened sales in 2001 and was still finishing phases in 2023.

Read those as planting dates. A remnant white oak in Loudoun can live 300 to 600 years, and White Oak is the most abundant oak in the state. But most of what stands over an Ashburn back yard is not remnant. It is nursery stock, spaced for how it looked at ten, not thirty. The failure is structural rather than slow decline, and it arrives at once, in a storm.

The Bradford Pear Problem in a Subdivision Built in the Nineties

Callery pear, sold as Bradford, was planted by the tens of thousands across the United States from the early 1960s onward, and is typical of Northern Virginia subdivisions of this era. Virginia Cooperative Extension is blunt about why: the older trees “would essentially self-destruct when they got large,” because of poor branch attachment angles. The state forestry program purged hundreds of Callery pears in April 2024.

If you have one, you have a tree that splits at a union rather than failing at the root, usually in wind or ice, usually taking a fence with it. There is a good trade available: the Loudoun Master Gardeners run an Invasive Tree Removal Exchange. Remove a listed invasive (Bradford pear qualifies), submit three photos including proof of removal, and you get a free native sapling. Loudoun residents only, pickup at 750 Miller Dr. SE, Leesburg.

Leyland Cypress Was the Privacy Screen. Now It Is the Liability.

The other signature planting is the Leyland cypress hedge. Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia describe it as overused in the 1980s and 90s, then unable to be controlled. Safety and tree care services hinge on catching it early. Seiridium canker browns branches and moves tree to tree along a hedge; Phytophthora root rot and Botryosphaeria are often fatal in stressed trees; bagworms cannot be easily controlled. The structural issue matters most on a windy night, since the root systems do not keep up with the size of the trees. One Master Gardener describes three trees from a mature hedge falling over after a heavy storm.

Siting made it worse, since these went in between homes or in common areas where water collects, and multi-trunk nursery stock splits apart in snow and ice. A hedge browning from the inside is not a pruning job. It is a decision about how much of the screen comes out, and once canker or root rot has moved through most of a hedge, tree removal is usually the more honest answer than trying to save what is left.

In Broadlands, You Need Approval to Remove a Dead Tree

In most of Ashburn the gatekeeper is not the county but your HOA, and the rule is stricter than most owners assume. Before filing for removal, it is worth asking whether structural pruning can correct a lean or reduce weight on a suspect limb instead, since that work does not trigger the same approval process. But once a tree is actually coming out, the Broadlands Association states it plainly: “Approval is required to remove any tree, either dead or alive, whose trunk measures 4″ or more in diameter when measured at the height of 4′ from the ground.” Applications go to the Modifications Subcommittee, due a week before the meeting.

The same page carries a useful exception: you may trim branches back to the property line without HOA permission, but may not enter a neighbour’s property or damage the tree. Ashburn Farm Association and Ashburn Village Community Association run architectural review too, so check your covenants, because Broadlands’ is the only threshold published as a number.

Loudoun’s 5,000-Square-Foot Line, and Broad Run’s 300-Foot Buffer

Loudoun treats vegetation removal as land disturbance: removing vegetation, including tree stumps, is considered clearing. A grading permit is required at 5,000 square feet or more of disturbance, and smaller projects can also trigger it on properties carrying sensitive environmental designations. For a homeowner taking down one or two trees, that usually means no county grading permit, unless an overlay applies to your lot, which is exactly the kind of question an arborist assessment can answer before you start work.

Four overlays trigger review: Limestone, Mountainside, Steep Slopes, and River and Stream Corridor Resources. RSCR is the Ashburn one. Under Chapter 6 of the Zoning Ordinance the buffer is 300 feet minimum along Scenic Rivers, the Potomac, Bull Run and Broad Run, and Broad Run runs through Ashburn, with 100 feet on other streams, measured from the ordinary high water mark. Covered activities must preserve existing vegetation to the maximum extent possible, though invasive or non-native vegetation may be removed and replaced with natives. In the Floodplain Overlay District a grading permit is not required; a zoning permit is required instead.

Trees in the road right-of-way are separate again: those roads are VDOT-maintained, and pruning or removing vegetation there requires a VDOT land use permit. For the county rules, Loudoun’s Department of Building and Development is 703-777-0220, option 4.

What the March 2026 Storm Did on Belmont Ridge and Waxpool

On March 16, 2026, gusts were forecast above 70 mph across Loudoun. More than 6,100 Dominion customers lost power, Broadlands among them, and over 5,500 were affected near Belmont Ridge Road and Waxpool Road. Several large trees snapped off and uprooted in the Waterford area.

That is the weather these plantings meet. A Callery pear with a bad union and a Leyland cypress with a root plate too small for its height fail in the same gust, toward the house, because that is where they were planted. Treat a downed line as live; call 911 if there is danger.

The Ashburn Communities We Work

Ashburn is unincorporated Loudoun County, not an incorporated town, covering ZIPs 20147 and 20148, population 46,349 at the 2020 census, up from 3,393 in 1990. Our tree services, including storm damage cleanup after events like the March 2026 storm that hit Belmont Ridge and Waxpool, run across all of it. We work across Ashburn Village, Ashburn Farm, Broadlands, Brambleton, Ashbrook, the Courts and Ridges at Ashburn, Village of Waxpool, Moorefield Station, Loudoun Valley Estates and Belmont, plus the corridors around One Loudoun and Loudoun Station.

If your lot backs onto Broad Run, the W&OD Trail, Ashburn Park or the Beaverdam Reservoir side of Reservoir Park, say so when you call, since that changes which rules apply.

Book a Walk-Round of Your Ashburn Lot

Point us at the pear, the screen or the oak you are unsure about. An arborist looks at it where it stands, tells you what it is and whether it can stay, and says who has to approve the work.

Questions From Ashburn Homeowners

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Ashburn?
From the county, usually not for one or two trees. Loudoun requires a grading permit at 5,000 square feet or more of land disturbance, and vegetation removal counts as clearing. Overlays change that. Your HOA is the likelier gatekeeper.

My tree is already dead. Do I still need HOA approval?
In Broadlands, yes. The association requires approval to remove any tree, dead or alive, with a trunk 4 inches or more in diameter measured 4 feet from the ground. Other Ashburn associations run architectural review too, so check your covenants first.

My neighbour’s branches hang over my fence. Can I cut them?
Broadlands’ guidance is that you may trim back to the property line without HOA permission, but may not enter the neighbour’s property or damage the tree. Worth confirming against your own association’s documents.

Is a Bradford pear worth saving?
Rarely, once it is large. Cooperative Extension’s account is that these trees essentially self-destruct at size because of poor branch attachment. Pruning buys time on a young one; on a mature tree the union is the problem. The Master Gardeners’ exchange will trade you a native sapling for it.

Why is my Leyland cypress hedge browning from the middle?
Most often Seiridium canker, which moves along a hedge tree to tree, sometimes root rot where water collects. Both are worse in stressed trees. It needs diagnosis before removal, because how far it has travelled decides how much of the screen comes out.

Do you grind the stump once a tree comes out?
Yes. Stump grinding is offered as part of a removal job or on its own for stumps left behind by prior work, including old Bradford pears and cypress that came out before we were called.

Do you serve areas near Ashburn too?
Yes. Of our other service areas, Great Falls, across the line in Fairfax County, is the closest to Ashburn; see tree service in Great Falls.

Should I be worried about spotted lanternfly?
Loudoun County states that property owners are responsible for finding and destroying spotted lanternflies on their own property. Look for a black appearance on trees and the ground beneath, scrape egg masses from late September through April, and remove Tree of Heaven, which the county asks residents to take out. The state repealed the lanternfly quarantine on March 27, 2025.

G&V just left our house and because the experience was so good, I was compelled to write a review right away. I am absolutely satisfied with their work! The front of our home was a mess with a ton of weeds and overgrown plants. As a result, I searched Yelp and found G&V Tree and Landscaping Services. I was especially impressed with the great reviews. From the 1st call for the estimate through today, every communication was professional and helpful. We ended up getting the front redone. By the time I got home I was amazed with how everything looked. I thought I was at a different house! Furthermore, the two gentleman who did the work which included a tree trim, weeding, and redone front, really could not have been nicer. I could really tell they took a lot of pride in their work. I cannot recommend G & V enough!

A note to Mario and his staff for his professionalism and timeliness with tree service at our outdoor storage facility. We have a number of trees along the back fence line that consequently require maintenance and can be tricky to access. We have used G&V for several tree removal and trimming projects in this area so far. They respond to our requests quickly and most of all complete the work on time and with clean-up included. In addition, they also have online bill pay, which is nice. Highly recommend!

    Amanda H. -from Yelp

I contacted G&V on the morning because of an impending storm. I need them for emergency removal of a dead tree that as a result, would have caused severe damage to my home. Mario and his crew not only arrived within the hour, they worked into the beginnings of the storm itself to assure my home was safe. Therefore G&V has my highest recommendation for exceptional customer service, fair pricing, and quality of work. A 5-star rating is not high enough for G&V.

    Pedro -from Facebook

I cannot say enough positive things about G&V Tree and Landscaping Services. They got back to me right away and scheduled to come out within a day to give a quote. The quote was beyond reasonable for the work and they were able to come out and do it in just four days. Their team arrived on time and was so courteous and thorough. They trimmed four trees in my backyard that were very overgrown and cleaned everything up afterwards. I will definitely be using them again and recommend them to friends.
