Pruning Every Tree on a West End Alexandria Property

The problem

Several trees on this property needed work at once. In front, a mature Leyland cypress was full of dead interior growth and a large holly had grown above the top window line and against the house. In back, red maples were throwing water sprouts over the fence and a row of Green Giant arborvitae had grown tall and heavy along the dog fence.

What we did

Front of the house: we cleaned the dead wood out of the Leyland cypress and rebalanced its shape, then brought the holly down below the top window line and cut it back off the siding so air can move through it.

Back of the house:

• Three red maples: removed the lower water sprouts and cut growth back to the main trunks behind the fence.
• Six Green Giant arborvitae: reduced about two feet in height along the dog fence, keeping the privacy screen without the extra weight, and fully shaped the corner tree.
• Shaped two more hollies and two more Leyland cypress.
• Reduced the crown of a crape myrtle by about three feet and took out lower and crossing branches.
• Installed one structural support cable.

The result

Every tree on the lot is cleared off the house and fence, lighter in the crown and better balanced, which lowers the chance of storm breakage and keeps the privacy screen healthy for years.
