Keep everyone back from the tree, treat any wire as live, and move vehicles only if you can reach them without walking under the tree. Take photos from a safe distance. Don’t try to cut a tree that’s resting on a building: the weight can shift onto the structure as soon as the wood is cut. In Fairfax Station, a severe storm uprooted a 50–60 ft beech and laid it across a family’s roof. A climber set up a Port-a-Wrap on a sound tree next door and the crew lowered the beech off the house one section at a time, then loaded out the wood with a grapple truck.
Cranes for heavy sections over roofs and fences, bucket trucks for safe access to broken tops, rigging to lower wood under control, and chippers and a grapple truck for the cleanup. Our certified arborists decide on site whether a tree can be pruned back to safety or needs full removal.

A lightning protection system protects a tree from strikes and reduces the risk of side-flashes to your home, business or people near the tree. It reduces the risk of damage, but a protected tree is still not a safe place to shelter during a storm.
A strike can kill a tree outright or weaken it. G&V recommends protecting trees that are historic, mature, tall or of sentimental value. Some species are struck more often, including oak, gum, maple, poplar and pine; trees attract lightning because they are tall, hold moisture and give the strike a path to the ground.
Lightning protection systems should be recommended and installed by an arborist or a certified installer experienced with tree systems, in accordance with the ANSI A300 standards adopted by TCIA, and inspected every year for any adjustments or replacements.
